Collapsible or fixed
Collapsible grilles fold back to the side of the opening, so a shop can be shut behind a grille at night and open normally in the morning, and a domestic window keeps its light and its fire escape route. Fixed bars and grilles are the stronger option where an opening never needs to be used — cellar lights, plant rooms, rear windows, storage.

Fire escape
Anything fitted to a window that forms an escape route has to open from the inside without a key. That is a hard constraint on the design, not an optional extra, and it is dealt with at the survey rather than discovered afterwards.

Common questions
Will a grille stop me getting out in a fire?
Not if it is specified properly. Any grille on an escape window is fitted so it releases from the inside without a key. That requirement is settled at the survey, before anything is made.
Do they have to look institutional?
No. Finishes come in white, black or a colour to match the frames, and a collapsible grille sits folded to the side of the reveal when it is open. On period buildings the profile and colour can be chosen to disappear rather than announce itself.
Can you make one for an odd-shaped opening?

Will my insurer reduce the premium?
Some will, some will not, and some require bars on specific openings before they will cover the property at all. Worth asking them directly before you commit — and worth getting the requirement in writing.
